New Musicals at 54 is a series produced by Programming Director Jennifer Ashley Tepper. Some of the 10 new and diverse musicals by a selection of today’s most talented writers have had out-of-town productions, some have had workshops… now’s your chance to be first to see them in NYC! The New Musicals at 54 are one-night-only concerts celebrating each new show with songs, behind-the-scenes stories, and all-star casts!
FUNKED UP FAIRY TALES by Kirsten Childs (The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin, Miracle Brothers) is a collection of delightfully twisted urban fairy tales for sophisticated children and grown-up kids. The show welcomes you to the world of Titania, Faireetheeya, and Magikwanda: teenage fairies with attitude. They wag their heads and suck their teeth as they turn things upside down to pass their Fairyland Academy exam. Will they pull through with flying colors and earn their Happy Ending Crowns?
This wacky and fresh new musical has received workshops or development at NAMT, Barrington Stage, Sundance, and Manhattan Theatre Club. This is its first public NYC performance! Expect an all-star cast of Broadway performers, cut songs and scenes, and fond theater memories and personal anecdotes from those who have performed the musical over the years. The FUNKED UP FAIRY TALES concert will give the audience a unique perspective on how theatrical collaboration among actors and writers can bring new heights of delightful silliness to comic theater work. Magical deliciousness guaranteed!
